Rocks and Soil- The Rock Cycle

The Rock Cycle
-What changes rocks?
-water freezing
-heat
- plant roots
-pressure
-time
-wind
-rain
-rivers

Soil
- made up of broken down rock and organic material.

Erosion

Erosion
-Erosion is ALWAYS  happening- it never stops
- It flattens hills and mountains
-Water can break apart rocks
- It can damage houses and structures
- Plant roots can cause erosion
-Chemicals and pollution in the air cause erosion

Fossils

M10 Fossils
-Trees can turn into fossils
-It takes a LONG time to dig out a fossil- up to 200 hours
- scientist use the rock around the fossil to determine the age of the fossil
- Fossils take a long time to form- billions of years
- fossilized means turned into a fossil
- Fossils are parts of animals or plants turned into stone
-Scientist use picks and brushes to dig fossils out.
-birds are related to dinosaurs
-there are different types of fossils all over the world
- Fossils are being made all the time
-fossils are evidence of living things
-fossils can be extinct animals

Tractors at work

May 28   Soil
The difference between dirt and soil is soil has decomposing organic material- dead plants and animals or poo, or compost- rich organic material.
The other things in soil are:
1. Sand- largest particle found in soil. Sand helps the water flow through the soil. Sand does not have any nutrients.
2. Silt- powdery when dry, and slippery when wet- mud.
3. Clay- holds many nutrients. Too much clay makes the soil too heavy for plants.
Best soil is LOAM- a mix of sand, silt, and clay.
10-30% clay
30-50% silt
25-50% sand
Soil experiment
loamy soil, sandy soil, clay soil, compost

Sample 1- Description: _dry, brown, soft, fine grains, not slippery, messy- stayed on hands
I think this is loamy soil

Sample 2- Description: moist, chunky, dark and rich looking, smelled like a healthy garden, black or very dark brown,
                I think this is compost

Sample 3- Description: soft, rocky, smooth, slipped through my fingers, light brown, like pudding when wet.
I think this is sandy soil

Sample 4- Description: felt rocky, smooth when wet
I think this is clay soil
